Thinking about a one-way rental with Sixt? You’re in for a treat! Thanks to their rapid expansion across the U.S., your road trip options just got a whole lot more flexible. What used to come with hefty drop-off fees is now an affordable and convenient choice, thanks to Sixt’s growing network and updates to its rental policies.
In the past, renting a car one-way with Sixt could lead to expensive drop-off charges if you were picking up and returning the car at different locations. These fees added up quickly, especially on long-distance drives. But as Sixt continues to expand its footprint across the U.S., those dreaded extra charges are becoming a thing of the past.
Here’s how it all started: In 2020, Sixt made a bold move by acquiring over 10 airport locations from Advantage Rent A Car, which had filed for bankruptcy. This purchase included major airports like Boston, Houston, and the New York City area, significantly boosting Sixt’s presence in the Northeast and beyond.
And they’re not stopping there. In 2023 and 2024, Sixt opened new branches in high-traffic airports such as Salt Lake City (SLC), Milwaukee (MKE), and Kansas City (MCI), as well as downtown locations in Washington, D.C., and Portland. The company is also eyeing even greater expansion in New York City, with plans to expand further at Newark Liberty International Airport.
What does this mean for you as a renter? Simply put, a seamless and affordable one-way rental experience. Sixt used to have stricter policies about driving across state lines, but with its growing network, it’s now much easier to travel between most of the 48 contiguous states without facing extra fees. That means less stress and more freedom for your road trip!
That said, there are a few exceptions. If you’re renting from specific areas in New England, such as Springfield, Massachusetts, or West Place, Connecticut, there are still restrictions. For these locations, you’ll need to stay within a designated set of states, including Massachusetts, New York, and Vermont. Venture beyond this region, and expect to pay some additional fees.
In short, Sixt’s expanding presence in the U.S. is changing the game for one-way car rentals. With fewer limitations and lower fees, your road trip just got a lot easier and more affordable. Just make sure to check the policies for your specific rental location before you hit the road!
